WebApr 9, 2024 · Sam Hendrix (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.) and his blind wife Susy (Audrey Hepburn) accidentally harbor a doll that was used to smuggle heroin to New York City. Criminals show up at the Hendrix home to retrieve the doll but find that it’s been misplaced. This leads to a game of cat-and-mouse as Susy fights off the attackers alone in her apartment. The Country Wife was first performed in January 1675, by the King's Company, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. This luxurious playhouse, designed by Christopher Wren, had opened less than a year before and provided a more modern stage to accommodate innovations in scenic design, while still allowing a close connection between actors and the audience.
